This woodland will protect and enhance habitats for both terrestrial and aquatic species. Planting along the burn will provide essential shade, helping to regulate water temperature and prevent overheating - creating favourable conditions for a range of species to thrive.

Improve water quality

This woodland will improve the health of the burn, which feeds into the River Tweed. Situated on a large floodplain that has been heavily grazed in the past, the site will benefit from the exclusion of livestock - reducing bank erosion and limiting sediment runoff. These changes are expected to enhance gravel quality downstream, supporting key species like salmon and trout during spawning.

Habitat linkage and corridors
Habitat linkage and corridors

While there are pockets of native woodland upstream and downstream, this stretch of the floodplain remains relatively sparse. The Wychwood project will bridge this gap, significantly improving habitat connectivity along the river corridor and creating a continuous refuge for wildlife across the landscape.

The site lies within the target area of the Destination Tweed project, which links a network of initiatives and a walking trail stretching from the source of the Tweed to the sea. The River Tweed Trail passes alongside the Wychwood site, the woodland will enhance the landscape for visitors - offering a more scenic and biodiverse experience with clear recreational and wellbeing benefits
