Innerhadden
In the hills of Perthshire, the Innerhadden project is transforming an abandoned grouse moor into native woodland. Overlooking Dunalastair Water within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area, it will boost biodiversity, restore habitats, protect watercourses, and capture carbon.

Located above the Dunalastair Water in the Tummel/Rannoch valley, Innerhadden is a bold and forward-thinking woodland creation project in Highland Perthshire. The scheme spans across sloping hills with a mixture of peaty and podzolic soils, supporting a diverse planting palette rooted in native pinewood and birch ecosystems.
The site will transform former grouse moorland into a rich mosaic of Scots pine, birch, alder and willow. Planting design has been informed by ecological site classification and tailored to local vegetation and soil conditions, ensuring long-term woodland health. Native pine species will be concentrated along dry heaths and the slopes of the Innerhadden Burn, while birch-dominated woodlands will establish on wetter ground. Existing native woodland remnants and riparian corridors will be extended, creating connectivity for wildlife and bolstering the broader habitat network.
Importantly, Innerhadden’s woodlands will help protect Dunalastair Water (SSSI) and contribute to the health of the River Tay SAC by shading and sheltering watercourses, with buffers and variable density planting improving aquatic habitats. This project captures carbon while improving biodiversity and water quality, all within one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes.
