Glenorchy Farm
Nestled deep in a historic Scottish glen, Glenorchy Farm is home to a growing native woodland that seeks to restore the spirit of the ancient Caledonian Forest. With a mix of birch, oak, and Scots pine, this project is reviving biodiversity, supporting iconic wildlife, and contributing to Scotland’s net-zero goals.

Planted in 2019, the Glenorchy Farm woodland project lies in the heart of Argyll, in a glen once thought to be the centre of the old Caledonian Forest, as described in Jim Crumley’s The Great Wood. Surrounded by commercial Sitka spruce and larch plantations, this native woodland breathes new life into a landscape with deep ecological roots.
Designed to echo the natural woodlands of the region, the scheme includes birch, oak, and Scots pine on suitable soils, with alder along riparian areas and a rich mix of rowan, willow, and aspen throughout. The result is a layered, diverse habitat that supports native species and slowly rebuilds the lost connections of a once-thriving ecosystem. It also helps screen the surrounding plantation forests, softening the visual impact on the glen.
Previously used for grazing, the land is now regenerating with minimal intervention. Trees are left to self-thin naturally, and windblown wood is allowed to decay in place, boosting deadwood content and biodiversity. Red squirrels, pine martens, otters, and golden eagles all stand to benefit from the expanding habitat and improved ecological continuity. In addition, wood ants have been observed making nests across the site.
The project supports the Argyll and Bute Woodland and Forestry Strategy’s goal of expanding native woodland to aid carbon sequestration and restore semi-natural habitats. Over the next 100 years, it is expected to sequester 12,261 tonnes of CO₂, according to Woodland Carbon Code-validated calculations.
