Hopecarton Burn
Hopecarton Burn used to be upland sheep grazing land but has now been transformed into a diverse woodland mainly consisting of broadleaf trees.

The Hopecarton Burn project is a carefully designed woodland creation scheme aimed at establishing a resilient and productive mosaic of forests on land previously used for upland sheep grazing.
The project combines multiple silvicultural systems to ensure sustainable timber production while responding sensitively to soil, topography, and exposure. Broadleaved species, including Silver Birch, Aspen, Field Maple, and Beech, will be managed under a continuous cover system, with programmed thinning to maintain structural diversity and a natural forest character. Conifers, including Norway Spruce and Scots Pine with Silver Birch, will follow a fell-and-restock approach, providing long-term timber yields in the more exposed upper zones and poorer-drained areas.
Woodland establishment will combine excavator cultivation, EnviroMounding, and hand planting to achieve variable stocking densities that reflect the site-specific design. Broadleaved thinning is anticipated around years 20–23, while conifers will follow a structured felling and restocking cycle over 40–60 years.
The high costs of establishing and maintaining such a complex design on a fertile, landscape-sensitive site make the project challenging without additional support. Carbon funding provides a critical enabling mechanism, improving economic viability and allowing the scheme to proceed. Hopecarton Burn will deliver sustainable timber, enhance landscape resilience, and create a diverse woodland. It is available to support to help make the project a success.

Certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, the UK’s government-backed standard for carbon-funded woodland creation.
