Mai Ndombe
Mai Ndombe protects 248,956 hectares of critical bonobo and forest elephant habitat within the world’s second-largest intact rainforest. Located in the Congo Basin, this project tackles the root causes of deforestation and biodiversity loss by bringing climate and development finance to the communities that call this forest home.

Since 2011, the Mai Ndombe REDD+ project has been a powerful force for conservation in the Congo Basin. It has dramatically reduced deforestation, supported forest regeneration, and helped endangered wildlife recover, proving that people and nature can thrive together.
Spanning 299640 hectares of rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this project safeguards critical habitat for bonobos, forest elephants, and other iconic species. Partnering with local communities reduces the pressures driving deforestation and creates vital social support. Key achievements to date include building 12 new schools, establishing mobile health clinics that have treated thousands, and creating well over 300 jobs. Clean water access has also been dramatically improved, with 11 solar-powered wells now reaching thousands of people.
The project’s environmental impact is equally significant, preventing the commercial logging of nearly 300000 hectares of critical forest and allowing deforested areas to naturally regenerate. As a result, species like leopards, elephants, and buffalo have begun returning to areas they had long abandoned, while bonobo populations are rebounding.
With an estimated 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂e avoided every year, this project is helping to protect one of the most important carbon stores on the planet.

The project has built the school, provided school uniforms to children, built a water well for potable water in the village and they are also teaching us honey production techniques…The school is the most important because we’ve never had this in the past.
