Acheilidh
Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, this new native woodland will let nature take its course through a hands-off, non-interventionist approach. Led by the Acheilidh Crofting Sheep Stock Club, the project will bring lasting benefits to the local community and surrounding ecosystems.

At just under 110 hectares, Acheilidh stands as one of our largest woodland creation projects. Planted in 2020, it’s set to sequester an impressive 20,468 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 35 years, according to our Woodland Carbon Code-validated calculations. We’re inviting businesses and individuals to support this vital project by purchasing the carbon credits it generates, helping to accelerate our collective efforts against climate change and biodiversity loss.
As a non-intervention project, Acheilidh has been designed to largely let nature take its course. The trees—Scots pine, birch, alder, and a variety of other native broadleaves—have been left to establish themselves, with minimal interference. Over time, natural processes will decide how the land evolves, creating a truly unique woodland ecosystem.
Once farmland, this site now offers a wealth of environmental and community benefits. It provides crucial habitat for the Hen Harrier, a bird of prey in need of protection. Careful planning has incorporated buffer zones and maintained important foraging areas by limiting planting along the main watercourse, ensuring the habitat remains suitable for these magnificent birds.
Located within a Special Protection Area (SPA) and part of the Strath Carnaig and Strath Fleet Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), this woodland plays a vital role in supporting Hen Harrier breeding and preserving Scotland's rich natural heritage.
