Wester Coshieville
Wester Coshieville is home to a growing upland oak woodland that strengthens Scotland’s fragmented native tree cover. Planted in 2019, this project is not only helping to capture carbon but is also enhancing biodiversity, connecting habitats, and supporting a more resilient landscape.

On a hillside above the River Tay near Grandtully, Wester Coshieville is the site of a native woodland restoration project that blends ecological ambition with landscape sensitivity. Formerly used for sheep grazing and silage, the land is now transitioning into a vibrant mosaic of oak, birch, juniper and other native species, creating a rich upland habitat that reflects the character of nearby ancient woodland.
The planting, completed by local planters, was designed to build ecological resilience by expanding two existing woodland fragments—one an area of ancient semi-natural oakwood, the other an upland birchwood. Now, these previously isolated woodlands are linked, forming a continuous corridor that supports birds, mammals, and invertebrates across the hillside. Within the fenced area, a mature stand of juniper (an important but declining species in Scotland) has also been protected and enhanced.
This woodland is expected to sequester 8,943 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 60 years, according to Woodland Carbon Code-validated calculations. But its impact reaches far beyond carbon. Wester Coshieville is strengthening biodiversity in Highland Perthshire and contributing to the restoration of Scotland’s native tree cover, with a planting approach designed to integrate seamlessly into the wider landscape.
A huge thank you to all who supported this project.
