Wester Coshieville

Woodland creation

Wester Coshieville is home to a growing upland oak woodland that strengthens Scotland’s fragmented native tree cover. Planted in 2019, this project is not only helping to capture carbon but is also enhancing biodiversity, connecting habitats, and supporting a more resilient landscape.

About this project

On a hillside above the River Tay near Grandtully, Wester Coshieville is the site of a native woodland restoration project that blends ecological ambition with landscape sensitivity. Formerly used for sheep grazing and silage, the land is now transitioning into a vibrant mosaic of oak, birch, juniper and other native species, creating a rich upland habitat that reflects the character of nearby ancient woodland.

The planting, completed by local planters, was designed to build ecological resilience by expanding two existing woodland fragments—one an area of ancient semi-natural oakwood, the other an upland birchwood. Now, these previously isolated woodlands are linked, forming a continuous corridor that supports birds, mammals, and invertebrates across the hillside. Within the fenced area, a mature stand of juniper (an important but declining species in Scotland) has also been protected and enhanced.

This woodland is expected to sequester 8,943 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 60 years, according to Woodland Carbon Code-validated calculations. But its impact reaches far beyond carbon. Wester Coshieville is strengthening biodiversity in Highland Perthshire and contributing to the restoration of Scotland’s native tree cover, with a planting approach designed to integrate seamlessly into the wider landscape.

Co-benefits

Habitat expansion

Habitat expansion

By linking ancient upland oak and birch woodlands, this project expands the area of native habitat, creating a more resilient and continuous ecosystem for wildlife.

Native species support

Native species support

The planting plan reflects the local species mix and includes the protection of mature juniper, ensuring the survival of native flora adapted to the Highland environment.

Landscape restoration

Landscape restoration

Transforming former sheep pasture and silage land into native woodland enhances the visual character and ecological value of the Highland Perthshire landscape.

Soil health recovery

Soil health recovery

Replacing intensive grazing and silage production with woodland allows for improved soil structure, organic matter levels, and erosion control over time.

Biodiversity uplift

Biodiversity uplift

A diverse mix of native trees within and beyond the oak woodland supports a variety of plants, birds, insects, and mammals, increasing overall site biodiversity.

Our involvement

Wester Coshieville is a great example of how we adapt our approach to meet landowners’ needs while ensuring long-term project success. Our involvement covered every stage, from upfront funding to ongoing delivery.

Enabled early action

Step 1

Enabled early action

Although originally set up for payment upon credit sales, we paid the landowners in full shortly after planting and two months before validation. This flexibility gave them financial certainty and enabled early progress.

Guided successful certification

Step 2

Guided successful certification

We supported the landowners through Woodland Carbon Code validation, managing the data and documentation to ensure a smooth and compliant process.

Connected impact-driven buyers

Step 3

Connected impact-driven buyers

We led the sale of Wester Coshieville’s validated carbon credits, securing support from buyers such as Gatehouse Bank and Heathrow Airport. The project was also featured on the Carbon Club, reaching individuals as well as businesses. We managed all aspects of contracting and transactions.

Committed to long-term outcomes

Step 4

Committed to long-term outcomes

Our involvement continues with the project’s ongoing Woodland Carbon Code verification, helping safeguard its long-term climate and biodiversity impact.
