Milton of Mathers
In northeast Scotland, two coastal valleys were planted with native woodland to boost biodiversity, stabilise riverbanks and sequester carbon. In 2011, this new woodland became the first to be validated (then verified) under the Woodland Carbon Code. Today, it continues to deliver long-term benefits for nature, water and climate.

Nestled in the steep valleys of Den of Lauriston and Denfinella, just inland from the Aberdeenshire coast at Milton of Mathers, this woodland creation project was planted in 2008 with a vision for conservation, biodiversity and improved land use. It was the very first scheme to be certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, setting a precedent for high-integrity, nature-based climate action. The project won Scotland’s Finest Woods award soon after.
Over time, native tree planting has stabilised the banks of the burns running through each valley, reducing erosion and filtering runoff to improve water quality. The trees create vital habitat for local wildlife and act as a buffer zone, helping to protect sensitive areas downstream. One section sits adjacent to a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, known for its rich ground flora of ferns and tall herbs; while the SSSI remains largely unmanaged due to its steep gorge, the adjacent planting is expected to benefit its long-term health and integrity.
The project is set to sequester 6,662 tonnes of CO₂ over 70 years, contributing to climate mitigation alongside its biodiversity and water benefits. Our thanks go to all those who supported its establishment and helped make this pioneering scheme possible.

Certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, the UK’s government-backed standard for carbon-funded woodland creation.
