Milton of Mathers

Woodland creation

In northeast Scotland, two coastal valleys were planted with native woodland to boost biodiversity, stabilise riverbanks and sequester carbon. In 2011, this new woodland became the first to be validated (then verified) under the Woodland Carbon Code. Today, it continues to deliver long-term benefits for nature, water and climate.

About this project

Nestled in the steep valleys of Den of Lauriston and Denfinella, just inland from the Aberdeenshire coast at Milton of Mathers, this woodland creation project was planted in 2008 with a vision for conservation, biodiversity and improved land use. It was the very first scheme to be certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, setting a precedent for high-integrity, nature-based climate action. The project won Scotland’s Finest Woods award soon after.

Over time, native tree planting has stabilised the banks of the burns running through each valley, reducing erosion and filtering runoff to improve water quality. The trees create vital habitat for local wildlife and act as a buffer zone, helping to protect sensitive areas downstream. One section sits adjacent to a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, known for its rich ground flora of ferns and tall herbs; while the SSSI remains largely unmanaged due to its steep gorge, the adjacent planting is expected to benefit its long-term health and integrity.

The project is set to sequester 6,662 tonnes of CO₂ over 70 years, contributing to climate mitigation alongside its biodiversity and water benefits. Our thanks go to all those who supported its establishment and helped make this pioneering scheme possible.

Co-benefits

Watercourse protection

Watercourse protection

Native trees planted along the burns help stabilise banks and reduce erosion, protecting the integrity of the watercourses over time.

Pollution buffering

Pollution buffering

The woodland acts as a natural barrier that filters agricultural runoff, reducing diffuse pollution and improving downstream water quality.

Biodiversity uplift

Biodiversity uplift

The native woodland enhances habitat diversity, supporting a wider range of wildlife species across the site and the surrounding landscape.

SSSI support

SSSI support

By buffering a nearby Site of Special Scientific Interest, the woodland helps maintain and protect a rare and delicate ground flora ecosystem.

Our involvement

This project is one of Forest Carbon’s earliest collaborations. It was planted 4 years before the Woodland Carbon Code was launched.

Provided early funding

Step 1

Provided early funding

Confident in the market we were building, we provided funding upon completion of planting. This early commitment gave the landowner financial certainty and reduced their upfront risk at a critical stage. Forest Carbon pioneered this kind of pre-validation investment in the UK.

Guided successful verification

Step 2

Guided successful verification

We led the project through Woodland Carbon Code validation and verification, managing documentation, data, and process to ensure full compliance and timely approval.

Connected values with action

Step 3

Connected values with action

We sold the carbon inventory to one of our earliest buyers, TGIC, managing the full contracting and transaction process. Their investment unlocked funding for the next generation of nature-based projects.

Ensured long-term success

Step 4

Ensured long-term success

Our involvement continues through managing and funding the ongoing Woodland Carbon Code verification process, helping safeguard the project’s climate and biodiversity impact for years to come.
