Doddington North
Doddington North is a large scale continuous cover woodland with a mix of conifers and broadleaves, located near Wooler in Northumberland.
Doddington North has a net planting area of over 250ha. It’s located near Wooler, Northumberland and was planted in 2017-18. When planted, it was the largest new forest in England for 25 years.
It is a large scale continuous cover woodland with a mix of conifers and broadleaves. The species includes a mix of Sitka Spruce, Scots Pine, and Birch, and Oak, and other broadleaf species.
The site is a source of sustainable hardwood and softwood timber. This aspect of the project is anticipated to support and engage future local enterprises. Doddington North has further benefits through providing shelter, rainwater interception, and wildlife support.
Certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, the UK’s government-backed standard for carbon-funded woodland creation.

This project will produce a large amount of sustainable timber over its lifetime which will benefit the local and national economy by providing responsibly sourced timber from well-managed forests.

Our involvement
At Doddington North, we helped the unlock the carbon value of the woodland creation project by guiding the project through Woodland Carbon Code certification and enabling early access to carbon finance when it was most needed.
Step 1
Provided early investment
Before validation or credit issuance, we committed to purchasing a portion of the anticipated carbon units. This gave the landowners early financial certainty and reduced their upfront risk. Forest Carbon pioneered this ‘pre-validation’ funding model in the UK.
Step 2
Guided the project through certification
We guided the landowner through Woodland Carbon Code validation, compiling the necessary documentation and managing the process to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely approval.
Step 3
Connected values with action
Once credits were issued, we helped bring the project to market and facilitated its full sale to organisations aligned with UK-based nature recovery. We managed contracts and handled the transaction process from start to finish.
Step 4
Ensured long-term success
We continue to support the project through funding ongoing verification under the Woodland Carbon Code, helping ensure its environmental benefits are realised well into the future.
