Camusluinie

Woodland creation

This new native woodland in Scotland connects with earlier planting to expand habitat networks, boost biodiversity, and support carbon capture, all while enhancing the natural landscape for people and wildlife alike.

About this project

Set in the wild and beautiful landscape of Ross-shire, Camusluinie is a new native woodland planted in 2021 to restore lost habitats and revive natural ecosystems. Bordering earlier planting from 2014 and existing woodland, the project is designed to extend habitat networks and strengthen biodiversity across the hills above the Kyle of Lochalsh.

The woodland features a carefully chosen mix of downy birch, rowan, alder, willow and Scots pine, echoing the tree cover that once dominated the region. These native species support a diverse range of wildlife, from pine martens and black grouse to lichens and fungi that thrive in the area’s unique oceanic climate.

Low-density planting around the woodland edge creates shelter and feeding opportunities for birds and small mammals, while watercourses flowing through the site help manage rainwater and provide valuable habitat. With no planned intervention, the woodland will be left to grow and evolve naturally, improving connectivity and building long-term ecological resilience.

This project is expected to sequester 12,840 tonnes of CO₂ over 65 years, helping to tackle climate change while restoring native forest in a historically deforested landscape.

We’re inviting businesses and individuals to support this ambitious restoration by purchasing carbon credits from Camusluinie, contributing directly to climate action and nature recovery in the Scottish Highlands.

Co-benefits

Biodiversity uplift

Biodiversity uplift

Native broadleaf species will support a rich mix of wildlife, from lichens and fungi to birds and mammals, helping restore a more diverse and balanced upland ecosystem.

Habitat corridors

Habitat corridors

The woodland links existing native planting and mature trees, creating continuous habitat that allows species to move, forage, and breed more freely across the landscape.

Flood mitigation

Flood mitigation

New planting will slow rainwater run-off and help stabilise soils on sloped terrain, reducing pressure on downstream watercourses and improving local water resilience.

Public access

Public access

The site supports outdoor access, encouraging people to engage with nature in a tranquil, ecologically rich landscape that contributes to community wellbeing.
