Beinn a Bheurlaich

Woodland creation

Beinn a Bheurlaich is a 185 ha mixed woodland creation project, established between 2019 and 2021, that will deliver a range of local environmental benefits. The woodland will enhance wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity, improve public access, and increase overall biodiversity across the site, while supporting long-term sustainable land use.

About this project

Beinn a Bheurlaich is a 185 ha mixed woodland mixed woodland project located in the Scottish Highlands. Planted between 2019 and 2021, the project comprises approximately 94% native species including downy birch, sessile oak, willow, alder, rowan, and scots pine. These species are to be managed on a non-intervention basis. The remaining 6%, which includes a small proportion of Scots pine and Norway spruce, are planned to be selectively thinned and felled at years 60 and 80.

The main aim of this project is to create new mixed commercial and native woodland as an alternative to low-value agricultural use.

At the core of the estate’s approach is a long-term commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and multi-generational land management. Ownership is shared between two families with deep personal ties to the estate, ensuring that decisions are guided by enduring environmental and community values rather than short-term returns. Land management prioritises ecological integrity, favouring habitat restoration, carbon storage, and landscape recovery over intensive timber extraction.

The new woodland will provide a range of benefits to the local environment, such as improving wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity, increasing public amenity access and increase the overall biodiversity benefits of the site.

Co-benefits

Biodiversity uplift

Biodiversity uplift

The creation of extensive native woodland and associated habitats will significantly enhance biodiversity across the site. A wide range of plant and animal species will benefit, supported by a predominantly non-intervention management approach that allows natural ecological processes to develop over time.

Public access

Public access

The project creates a more attractive and ecologically rich environment for walkers and visitors. It is used by local dog walkers and members of the public, as an amenity area.

Improved water quality

Improved water quality

Through woodland creation and associated peatland restoration efforts, the project will contribute to improved water regulation. Increased water retention in soils and vegetation will help reduce downstream flood risk, while also supporting river health and aquatic species, including salmon.

Habitat connectivity

Habitat connectivity

The woodland will strengthen habitat connectivity within the wider landscape, improving wildlife corridors and enabling species to move more freely. This increased connectivity supports healthier, more resilient populations and contributes to landscape-scale ecological recovery.

Sustainable timber

Sustainable timber

While the majority of the woodland is managed under a low-intervention approach, a small proportion will be subject to long-rotation thinning and felling. This provides a sustainable timber component while maintaining the project’s primary focus on ecological integrity and habitat restoration.
