Boston Beech Wood Extension

Woodland creation

Planted on the edge of Boston, England, this new woodland supports people as much as it supports nature. Expanding the much-loved Boston Woods Trust site, it provides more space for wildlife, local walks, and community connection.

About this project

This project supports the expansion of Boston Woods Trust’s community woodland on the northern edge of Boston, Lincolnshire. Surrounded by predominantly farmed land, the woodland encourages biodiversity back into the landscape while offering locals a tranquil place to walk, relax, and connect with nature. Footpaths, benches, parking, and open spaces are all part of the design, making this a truly accessible woodland for all.

The site will be managed as a native woodland under a continuous cover approach, with carefully planned thinning to promote long-term health and resilience. Over time, income from both high-quality timber and carbon sequestration will support the Trust’s financial sustainability, helping to safeguard the woodland for future generations.

Beneath the canopy, the woodland also fosters something less tangible but equally important: community spirit. A dedicated group of local volunteers help manage and monitor the site. Their work is essential to the project’s success and offers social, physical, and mental health benefits for those involved.

With wildlife returning and walkers already enjoying the paths, this woodland is a brilliant example of how nature recovery and community wellbeing can go hand in hand.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported Boston Beech Wood. Your backing is helping to grow lasting natural spaces and bring local communities closer to nature.

Our involvement

Boston Beech Wood is a great example of how flexible funding models, cross-sector collaboration, and careful project stewardship can bring impactful woodland creation projects to life.

Provided early investment

Step 1

Provided early investment

Although carbon payments are typically made after validation, we paid on completion of planting. This gave Boston Woods Trust early financial certainty and reduced its upfront risk. Forest Carbon pioneered this ‘pre-validation’ funding model in the UK.

Guided the project to certification

Step 2

Guided the project to certification

We worked with the Trust and an independent certifier to gather the documentation and data required for Woodland Carbon Code validation. Our experience ensured the process was smooth, efficient, and met all necessary standards.

Connected with a like-minded buyer

Step 3

Connected with a like-minded buyer

Once the carbon units were issued, we helped bring the project to market and facilitated its full sale to organisations committed to UK-based nature solutions, like Kier. Forest Carbon managed the contracting process and ensured a seamless handover.

Supporting long-term delivery

Step 4

Supporting long-term delivery

Our role continues as we manage the project’s ongoing verification responsibilities under the Woodland Carbon Code, helping ensure it delivers on its climate and environmental promises for years to come.

Some businesses can’t, in any form, capture carbon for themselves, so we’re doing our bit, and Forest Carbon is doing the job between the two.
