Tom's Wood

Woodland creation

Tom’s Wood is a native woodland in England, created to tackle climate change, support wildlife, and bring long-term ecological value to previously farmed land.

About this project

Tom’s Wood lies just outside the village of Foston in North Yorkshire. Planted in 2020 as a transition away from arable farming, the woodland is already playing a vital role in enhancing local biodiversity and improving habitat connectivity by joining up with neighbouring woodland areas.

The project was developed with a clear vision: to create a native woodland that not only locks up carbon but also looks beautiful, supports wildlife, protects soils, and makes a meaningful contribution to climate mitigation. Species were carefully selected to reflect local ecology, while buffer zones were left intact to protect nearby watercourses and maintain natural hydrological processes.

As heavy rainfall events become more frequent, the woodland’s dense canopy and root systems help reduce erosion and improve water retention across the site. It also strengthens ecological networks, offering new shelter and foraging opportunities for local species, from birds and pollinators to mammals.

According to our Woodland Carbon Code-validated calculations, Tom’s Wood is expected to sequester 14,114 tonnes of CO₂ over 100 years. Crucially, the carbon finance generated made the transition from marginal agricultural land financially viable and enabled the project to go ahead.

This woodland highlights how carbon-backed projects can support land use change that benefits both nature and climate. Our thanks go to everyone who supported Tom’s Wood and helped bring this vision to life.

Our involvement

Tom’s Wood and our long-standing partnership with James Lonsdale exemplify how collaboration and trust are key to delivering environmental outcomes.

Built a trusted partnership

Step 1

Built a trusted partnership

We’ve worked with land manager James Lonsdale since 2013, supporting 19 of his woodland projects to date. For Tom’s Wood, planted in 2020, James led the development, knowing we’d buy the carbon units once issued, based on a long-standing, informal agreement built on mutual trust.

Enabled early-stage delivery

Step 2

Enabled early-stage delivery

James covers upfront project costs and carbon risk for the first few years, including the period before Pending Issuance Units (PIUs) are available. Despite no formal contract, he commits early carbon offers to us, and if we agree to buy the credits, then we honour that commitment.

Took on the market risk

Step 3

Took on the market risk

Once PIUs are issued, we purchase the units into our inventory, transferring the market risk from James to us. At the time of Tom’s Wood, this was far from a sure bet. In 2020, the carbon market was still relatively unknown, with much less buyer interest or public attention.

Found the right buyers

Step 4

Found the right buyers

Once carbon units from Tom’s Wood were in our inventory, we connected with organisations looking to support meaningful nature-based climate action in the UK, like Consenna and Spotify. Their investment allowed us to reinvest in the next wave of high-integrity projects, ensuring the cycle of climate and biodiversity progress continued.

Quotation Open

The relationship between LH Farming and Forest Carbon is rooted in a shared appreciation for simplicity and a mutual dislike of unnecessary bureaucracy. Our long-standing partnership has directly contributed to the creation of significantly more woodland than would otherwise have been possible.

Co-benefits

Watercourse protection

Watercourse protection

Buffer zones protect nearby watercourses, helping to maintain natural hydrology and reduce runoff from surrounding land.

Flood mitigation

Flood mitigation

The woodland’s root systems improve water retention and slow surface flow, reducing the risk of downstream flooding.

Enhanced landscape

Enhanced landscape

Tom’s Wood connects with neighbouring woodland, softening the transition from farmland and enriching the local scenery.

Biodiversity uplift

Biodiversity uplift

Carefully selected native species create a thriving habitat that supports birds, mammals, and vital pollinators.
