About this project
Fasach Wood, located on the Waternish Peninsula of the Isle of Skye, is a carefully planned native woodland that blends conservation with agricultural productivity. Stretching from 10 to 60 metres above sea level and overlooking the Outer Hebrides, this woodland is set to transform the landscape, providing essential shelter for livestock and a thriving habitat for wildlife.
The project forms part of Forest Carbon’s new tree sponsorship offering, designed to support smaller-scale woodlands that can’t afford or justify the cost of Woodland Carbon Code certification. This approach allows businesses and individuals to directly fund impactful woodland projects like Fasach Wood, creating a meaningful connection with the land and the people who steward it.
The design intentionally includes a mix of native trees and woody shrubs like eared willow, grey willow, hawthorn, elder, and dog rose, creating diverse layers of vegetation that support a wide range of species. By linking previously isolated pockets of woodland and hedgerow, the project significantly increases the overall wooded area on the farm, helping to connect wildlife corridors and improve biodiversity.
Open areas have been left within the design to encourage non-woody plants and wildflowers, enriching the site's ecological value. Gates and planned pathways will allow for farm walks, integrating conservation with the Waternish Farm's broader business plan.
The woodland even inspired the name of the Gaelic song "Coille an Fhàsaich," written by local poet Donald MacKillop, this project captures the spirit of the island’s cultural heritage while delivering tangible environmental benefits.
