It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing, on August 3rd, of our friend, mentor and Forest Carbon co-founder, James Hepburne Scott.
James’ significant contribution to UK forestry and land management was recognised with the award of an OBE in 2023, and he is regarded by many as the instigator of the UK woodland and peatland carbon markets that have created the opportunity for greener, more sustainable, land management. Behind this impact was a man of empathy, humour and enthusiasm. With an expertise accrued from a lifetime’s interest in nature, land management and forestry James would freely share ideas, innovations and insights with others in the industry. He was equally ready to hear the input of others—always in the quest for the right outcomes.
James’ loss to us, at Forest Carbon, is immeasurable. For 20 years he was someone we spoke to nearly every day, solving innumerable problems together and treating successes or failures with equanimity — always as friends; he was always looking forwards, with optimism. Simple words with great weight: We will dearly miss him.
A Thanksgiving Service will be held at St Mary the Virgin, Upavon, Wiltshire on Wednesday 3rd September at 2pm. A celebration of his life will be held in Scotland at a later date.
