Stagecoach have five projects in Scotland, totalling over 57 hectares and capturing just under 22,000 tonnes of CO2.
The new woodland at Broxburn is on a site extending t
o 18.64 ha and is located on the outskirts of the town. The planted area (allowing for wayleaves, existing scrub, ancient / historical monuments and designed open ground) extends to 8.16 ha. Forest Carbon has worked closely with regular partners the Central Scotland Forest Trust (CSFT) in the creation of this community access woodland.
The principle objective of the scheme is to deliver the Central Scotland Forest Strategy of increasing woodland cover within this largely environmentally degraded region. Additional objectives are mitigation against climate change, enhancement of biodiversity and landscape improvements. The wood extends the earlier phases of Broxburn Community Woodland (which brings all the multi-purpose benefits of woodland to the local community). The woodland will be 25% conifer and 75% native broadleaf, based on species which have proven to be successful in the neighbouring site.
The woodland design has sympathetically accounted for the ancient and historical monuments within the site. CSFT involved the local community and schools in woodland establishment through organising planting events.
